It’s been a crazy week here. The weekend was a full on wrath of mother nature wind and rainstorm. The chicken yard was like walking through a swamp that is constantly trying to suck your boots off your feet with every step. I am grateful we did not get the snow and ice that so many other places got, but we did have to worry about a flooding basement and running the sump pump.
I canned 9 more quarts of rabbit stock. I really need to start making soup more often. And I’ve got bones in the freezer for the future.
We cleaned the rabbit shed. The husband bought one of those super long dusters on a stick and we got rid of the cobweb problem. Then he took a spray bottle of vinegar and a scratchy pad (Scotch Brite, I believe) and scrubbed the walls and ceiling. You’d be amazed where bunny pee can end up. Leo can send his flying at least 8 feet away and the ceiling is only 6 to 7 feet high depending on where you are standing. I shoveled out the floor and then swept it for good measure.
The weather finally calmed down (more or less) by Monday and so the husband and I did a slaughter session. We slaughtered six of Sweetie Belle’s kits, 4 bucks and 2 does. There is one undetermined that might be a buck left and two does of hers still alive. All of Piper’s kits are still alive. We were lucky we got the ones done we did.
The husband also lowered the PVC hutch frame so it is now only 8 inches off the ground instead of knee height. This simple drop allowed us to put 3 more cages on top. So right now we have 16 cages in the shed, plus one more in the garage, and then we have the 3 outdoor hutches. They are not all occupied, but I have weaned 4 of Lola’s boys and 4 of Serenity’s boys. We have sexed them now and between the two litters we have 9 boys, 4 girls, and 1 undetermined. We kept the littlest boy and the undetermined in with the mother and one of the girls. We’ll wean those ones in a couple of days.
Today is beautiful. Today would be the perfect day for slaughtering kits, but the husband has gone back to his job in Alaska, so that’s a no go. It is a perfect day for washing cages, though, so we will get some of that done. The daughter has early release from school so it works out perfectly.

I’ll do a complete final weight when we get the last of that litter slaughtered which won’t be for a couple of weeks now.

All in all we had a good week for gaining weight, even with the loss of two of Phoebe’s kits. And it is sunny enough and calm enough today that some of the rabbits can go outside in the tractors to play.
