Breeding the Rabbits and New Zealand Kit Weights at Five Weeks Old

Cinnabun and her babies are doing great. They are getting quite fat. She won’t put up with a nest box and the kits are doing better without it. They have a big hay nest in one corner. They will be 3 weeks old on Monday. Persephone’s are sleeping out of the nest box, too, and they are the same age. I’m not really worried about it at this point, though Cinnabun will have to have a nesting box for winter litters. The husband is going to build her something that is bigger and wider than the ones we have. She did okay with the cardboard boxes except for the eating them part.

I need to write this down before I forget, especially since I misplaced my calendar. On August 6th we bred 3 pairs of rabbits, so the due dates should be somewhere around the 5th through the 7nth of September. Rabbits bred were:

Sienna x Wildfire (First breeding for Sienna)
Phoebe x Starbuck
Serenity x Leo

Phoebe does not like Starbuck. We won’t do that pairing again. I mean, they bred and everything, but she was not happy with him. He’s far less of a gentleman than Leo and Wildfire. There is a huge difference in personalities there and she was pretty upset with him near the end. He’s a very hyper rabbit and she’s totally laid back. She gave him a good scratch on his face. So I think in the future we will either go back to breeding her with Wildfire or try breeding her with Alexander.

Sienna likes Wildfire just fine. She lifted immediately and he got the job done quickly and then groomed her. And of course Leo and Serenity have been breeding together for the last year and they get on well. Lots of cuddling with those two.

We may end up selling Starbuck. He’s pedigreed so he’ll sell easier. With Piper and Lola both dead, and Andromeda gone to live elsewhere, that doesn’t leave us with many rabbits that we can breed him to. There is Persephone, who he is not related to at all, and we could do Serena who is his niece, but Kalia is his daughter and so is Luna Blue (who is too little to breed yet). Phoebe is not related to him, which is why we tried them together. Other than that, we could breed him with Cinnabun in the future, but I don’t want to breed him with Firefly when she is old enough, because she is the only red not related to Wildfire. And Sienna, well, we’ll see how her reds turn out before we consider that.

I would like to see if Starbuck and Cinnabun would have a black kit. Since Starbuck’s daughter Kalia bred with Wildfire had a black kit, I’d like to see if it is coming through from her father, or if it was Piper, Kalia’s mother, who had the black gene. And if it was Piper, then I could try Leo and Cinnabun in the future, since Leo and Piper were siblings. I really wish Piper had lived long enough to raise the litter she was pregnant with when she died. I would have liked to see how the genetics played out there. Well, mostly I just wish Piper was still here.

Oh, well. Can’t have everything and rabbits don’t live forever.

On to the weights. Yesterday the 2 older litters turned 5 weeks old so we weighed them.

Kalia’s multi-colored kits:

Kit 1: 1 lb 12.3 oz (black)
Kit 2: 1 lb 12.2 oz (darkest brown)
Kit 3: 1 lb 10.2 oz (medium dark brown)
Kit 4: 1 lb 12.2 oz (big red)
Kit 5: 1 lb 10 oz (little red)

Serena’s Whites:

Kit 1: 1 lb 4.1 oz
Kit 2: 1 lb 6.6 oz
Kit 3: 1 lb 9.8 oz
Kit 4: 1 lb 5.7 oz
Kit 5: 1 lb 7.2 oz
Kit 6: 1 lb 3.1 oz
Kit 7: 1 lb 8.7 oz

All in all they are growing very well.
